The centre for  the production, conservation and use of healthy plant material

Created in the framework of a programme originated from a suggestion of the FAO aiming at countering the sanitary decline of typical fruit crops in the Mediterranean basin, caused by virus and virus like diseases, the centre:

  • is equipped with a laboratory for the purification and identification of viral agents.
  • specialises both in early diagnosis, with biological, serological and molecular techniques, of virus and virus like infections on stone fruits, citrus, grapevine and olive trees, and in the clonal selection and sanitation of infected cells by thermotherapy and in vitro tissue culture.

The germplasm bank

The bank is attached to the Centre for the production, conservation and use of healthy plant material. Its screehouses (insect proof greenhouses) ensure the healthy condition of the Mediterranean "primary sources" of apricot tree, plum tree, peach tree, cherry tree, almond tree, citrus trees, grapevine and olive tree, selected and sanitised in MAI-Bari laboratories. This is the first section of the channel of fruit tree nursery material provided with a genetic and sanitary certification in Apulia.
